Most move-out clean-ups fail on the same handful of spots, and most of them are inside things nobody opens until the walk-through.

A Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Kern County Renters and Sellers

Moving out is already a full job. Boxes, a truck, mail changes, a last look at the yard. The cleaning is the part that gets pushed to the final evening, and it's the part that someone else will inspect. A landlord, a buyer or the next tenant will open the same drawers and doors you stopped noticing years ago.

Here's what people actually check, and when to book the clean so none of it catches you out.

What gets opened, and what gets noticed

Nobody walks through a house and admires the coffee table. They open things. Start your list with the places most likely to be opened and found wanting:

  • Inside the oven, including the racks, the door glass and the bottom of the cavity.
  • Inside the fridge and freezer, with shelves and drawers wiped and the door seals checked.
  • Inside the cabinets and drawers, where crumbs, shelf paper marks and old rings gather.
  • The dishwasher filter and the sink drain.
  • Bathrooms, from the grout lines and shower floor to the base of the toilet.
  • Window tracks and sills, where dust and dead bugs pile up.
  • Floors under and behind where the furniture sat.
  • Closet shelves, doors and baseboards.

The inside of the oven and the fridge are the two most common misses. They're also the two that feel worst to someone moving in, because that's where food goes.

Kitchens first, because they take the most work

Empty every cabinet and drawer, vacuum out the loose crumbs, then wipe them top to bottom with a cleaner that suits the surface. Do the oven with the racks out, and let the cleaner sit before you scrub. Pull the fridge shelves and drawers and wash them in the sink. Wipe the range hood and the filter above the stove, then the backsplash and counters. Last, clean the sink and faucet until they shine.

Bathrooms and the stuff you stopped seeing

Soap scum and hard-water spots build up slowly, so you stop noticing them. Scrub the shower walls, the tub, the glass and the grout. Clean the toilet all the way around and behind. Wipe the vanity, the mirror, the light fixtures and the exhaust fan cover. Empty the medicine cabinet and wipe the shelves.

Then look at the details. Switch plates, door frames, door handles and the tops of baseboards collect fingerprints and dust, and a clean eye finds them fast.

Floors last, and don't forget the corners

Floors are the final step for the same reason they are in any clean: everything else drops dust and drips onto them. Vacuum first, including closets and corners, then mop. This is also when you see what was hiding under the couch or the bed. If carpet needs more than a vacuum, that's a separate job and worth planning ahead for.

When to book the clean

The best time is after the furniture is out and before the final walk-through. An empty house is the easiest one to clean. Nothing's in the way, and every shelf, closet and corner can be reached. If you book the clean while the beds and couches are still in place, the floors underneath get missed, and those are exactly where a landlord looks.

Plan your order like this. Pack and clear out first. Then clean the whole place top to bottom. Then do your last walk and hand over the keys. Leave a gap between the clean and the walk-through so a late box or a muddy boot doesn't undo the work.

What customers have said

Kelly C. hired us to deep clean a house before moving out, and wrote on Thumbtack: “They did an incredible job and went above and beyond with a deep cleaning as I prepared to move out of my house. I was amazed by the attention to detail and even going the extra mile to fix something that was broken.”

Julie M. had us clean an apartment after a family of four moved out. Her review: “Jen and Brandon cleaned an apartment for me after a family of four left.” And she added that we “left it ready for move in. I will use their services again.” That's the standard I hold every empty-house job to. It should be ready for the next person to walk in and start unpacking.

If you're selling or leaving a rental

Sellers want the house to photograph and show well, and a buyer opening the oven or the closet is forming an opinion. Renters want the walk-through to go quickly and cleanly. In both cases it helps to hand a cleaner your list and ask what they plan to cover. A good move-out clean covers the inside of appliances, cabinets, bathrooms, windows and floors, and the cleaner should be able to say so plainly.
